When God Doesn*t Seem Fair

Judges 6:13a: And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? . . .

Who among us has not asked that question? Sometimes we need to remember that God knows things that we don*t. He deals with us on a need-to-know basis.

1 John 3:20: For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

Deuteronomy 29:29: The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

It can be helpful to go back to the things which belong unto us. Romans 8:28 belongs to us.

Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

When bad things happen for which we see no useful purpose we can be greatly helped by asking ourselves a couple of questions about the two qualifiers in Romans 8:28. Do we love God? Loving Him is an activity of our heart, not of our mind or understanding.

Romans 5:5: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Our hearts can contain Christ. Our minds need to be transformed and renewed.

Ephesians 3:17a: That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; . . .

Romans 12:2: And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

We do not know everything about the humans we love but we love them anyway. If you can explain that to me we might be a step closer to knowing why we ought to love God even though we do not know everything about Him. He is far more inscrutable than the humans we know.

We can also be greatly encouraged in the midst of things that look bad if we remember that God has called us and has a purpose for doing it. Do you know He has a purpose for your life? Do you know what it is? Are you fulfilling it? A Christian who is unwilling to obey God will not know God*s purpose for his life. He will have a hard time when things happen that look bad.

For a Christian, things that seem bad are only temporary, even if they last the rest of his life.

Romans 8:18: For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
